Gospel--People and Places

1. Multiple choice: Who feared John the Baptist because he was a just and holy man? (a) The Pharisees; (b) Herod the tetrarch; or (c) the Roman soldiers.

2. The Pharisees were separatists who rejected contacts  with the  Roman occupiers. The Herodians were collaborators  with the Romans. What cause, recorded in the Gospels, united the Pharisees and Herodians? (a) Building the temple; (b) hatred of Herod;  or (c) a plot to destroy Jesus.

1.(b) Herod the tetrarch (Mark 6:20). John the Baptist had preached against Herod for marrying the wife of Herod's  brother Philip. Herod arrested John  to silence him, but he wanted to protect John because he respected and feared  him (vv. 17, 18).
